Cholera vaccination

What is it?

Cholera is a bacterial infection of the small intestine, typically caused by the ingestion of food or water that has been contaminated. It leads to vomiting, severe diarrhoea, and dehydration, which can be life-threatening if untreated.

Countries at risk

Cholera occurs in countries where poor sanitation and hygiene are common, particularly in areas lacking access to clean water and safe food supplies. Outbreaks are more frequent in regions affected by natural disasters or conflict, where infrastructure for clean water and sanitation may be compromised. Travellers to such areas should be cautious and consider cholera vaccination.

Travel precautions

We recommend vaccines for common destinations outside Europe, including Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio (DTP). Travellers who frequently visit developing nations or stay for extended periods should consider the Hepatitis B vaccine. Cholera vaccination is advisable for those visiting rural or remote areas of countries with higher cholera risk. Dukoral, the oral cholera vaccine, also helps protect against the most common type of traveller’s diarrhoea caused by E. coli, making it an excellent option for frequent travellers. The vaccine is administered in two doses, taken one week apart.

To reduce risk, only drink water from sealed bottles or water that has been boiled. Avoid ice, salads washed with tap water, and uncooked foods. Only eat freshly cooked meals that are piping hot and fruits that can be peeled.

Signs and symptoms

Cholera symptoms usually appear between 1 to 5 days after exposure. These include severe watery diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. Quick treatment is crucial to avoid complications.

The vaccination

The cholera vaccine consists of two doses taken over a 1-6 week period and provides protection for up to two years. It must be taken on an empty stomach, with no food or drink consumed one hour before or after taking it. Dukoral reduces the risk of traveller’s diarrhoea by 50%, making it a popular choice for travellers.
