Sore ear

Overview

Otomize is used to treat inflammation and infections affecting the outer ear.

Can Otomize be purchased?

At Amiry & Gilbride Pharmacy, Otomize can be provided to you after a consultation with one of our pharmacists, if deemed suitable for your condition.

What is Otomize?

Otomize contains three key ingredients that work together to treat ear inflammation and infection:

Dexamethasone: A corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties. It works by suppressing various immune system responses that trigger inflammation.

Neomycin sulphate: An antibiotic effective against a wide range of bacterial infections. It disrupts the bacteria’s ability to produce proteins and multiply by binding to specific cell components.

Acetic acid: An antibacterial agent that creates an acidic environment in the ear, making it difficult for bacteria to thrive and helping to manage infections.

How to use Otomize

Otomize is a suspension that is administered directly into the outer ear canal via a spray. To prepare the spray, you need to prime the pump by pressing it several times until it releases a fine mist. Make sure to do this away from other people. Before each use, check that the nozzle tip is securely in place to ensure proper delivery of the medication. When ready, gently insert the nozzle into your ear and press the pump once, which will dispense a measured dose of the suspension.

The recommended dose is one spray into the affected ear(s) three times per day. Treatment should continue for at least two days after your symptoms have completely cleared to ensure the infection is fully treated. If you notice no improvement after seven days of use, or if your symptoms become worse, discontinue the use of Otomize and contact your doctor for further advice.

It’s essential to remember that Otomize is for external ear use only. Do not swallow the medication, inhale it, or let it come into contact with your eyes. If any of these occur accidentally, seek medical assistance immediately. Additionally, do not apply more than the recommended dose or use it for longer than prescribed, particularly on damaged skin, as this could lead to serious side effects, including hearing loss.

If you forget a dose, don’t worry. Simply apply it as soon as you remember and continue with your regular dosing schedule. However, do not double up doses to make up for the missed one.

Who can use Otomize?

Otomize is suitable for adults and children over the age of 2. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their doctor before starting treatment to discuss any potential risks to their baby.

This medicine should not be used if you have had allergic reactions to any of its active ingredients (the corticosteroid or antibiotics) or its inactive components. Additionally, it is not suitable for treating areas outside of the outer ear, or if you have a perforated eardrum or a grommet fitted in the ear.

Otomize side effects

Common side effects include allergic reactions, such as itching, pain, or rash, as well as a stinging or burning sensation, which usually subsides after a few days of use.

If you suspect you have an ear infection, please fill in our consultation form, and one of our doctors will assess your condition.
