Introduction
Meningitis is an infection transmitted through close contact via nasal or throat droplets, such as through coughing, sneezing, or kissing. The Meningitis ACWY vaccination offers protection against four types of bacteria: A, C, W, and Y.
Travel Vaccination
If you’re planning to travel, it’s crucial to check whether you’ll be entering an area with a high risk of meningococcal meningitis. Sub-Saharan Africa, often referred to as the “meningitis belt,” is a region where this disease is especially prevalent, with Meningitis A being the most common cause. However, recent outbreaks of types W, X, and C have also been reported in this region.
Vaccination for College/University
First-time university students are advised to receive a single dose of the Meningitis ACWY vaccine.
What is Meningitis?
Meningitis refers to the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, caused by bacterial or viral infections. The most severe form is bacterial meningitis, which includes types A, C, W, and Y of meningococcal meningitis. Unlike viral meningitis, which is generally less severe, bacterial meningitis can lead to significant brain damage or even death.
The symptoms of meningitis can vary widely but typically include a severe headache, high fever, and vomiting. Some patients may also experience a stiff neck, light sensitivity, and extreme fatigue. A distinctive rash is a common but not universal symptom.
Meningitis can be life-threatening, with around 10% of cases resulting in death even with prompt treatment. Given the severity of bacterial meningitis, particularly in travellers to high-risk areas, vaccination is essential. The Meningitis ACWY vaccine provides comprehensive protection against the four most common types of the disease, making it an important safeguard for those travelling to areas where the risk is elevated.
Meningitis Certificate
In certain countries, such as Saudi Arabia, proof of Meningitis ACWY vaccination is mandatory for entry. This is particularly important for those undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage, where the vaccine is a compulsory requirement. Our pharmacies are recognised providers for The Muslim Council for Britain, offering certified vaccination services.
The certificate becomes valid 10 days after the vaccination is administered, so it’s important to plan ahead if your travel requires this documentation.
Meningitis Certificate for Students
For students attending university for the first time, it is strongly recommended to receive a single dose of the Meningitis ACWY vaccine. This precaution helps protect against the spread of meningitis in settings where young adults live in close quarters.
Side Effects
After receiving the Meningitis ACWY vaccine, some individuals may experience side effects, such as fever, nausea, headache, and fatigue. Localised reactions at the injection site, like redness or a small lump, are also common. These lumps typically resolve on their own within a few weeks.
If you experience any side effects that are severe or persistent, it is important to consult a doctor. This is particularly crucial if you develop a high fever (above 38.5°C) that lasts for more than 24 hours.
When To Get Vaccinated
If you plan to travel to a high-risk area, it’s advisable to get vaccinated at least two weeks before your departure. This timeframe allows the vaccine to take full effect, ensuring optimal protection during your trip.

The Meningitis ACWY vaccination is administered as a single dose.

Additional Precautions
Early detection and treatment are critical in managing meningitis. If you or a travel companion show any symptoms of meningitis, seek medical attention immediately. It’s important to note the ACWY vaccine does not cover Meningitis B, so additional vaccination may be required.
Risk If You Contract The Disease
Meningitis can cause severe inflammation around the brain and spinal cord, leading to potentially irreversible brain damage or death.
