Introduction
In the UK, bacterial meningitis is most often caused by meningococcal disease. There are around 1,500 cases reported annually.
The majority of children over 6 months old, as well as infants, will require two doses of the vaccine, but some people will need 3. The deciding factor is age.
What is Meningitis B?
It is a bacterial infection passed between people through activities such as sneezing, coughing or kissing. When they enter the bloodstream, the multiplying bacteria emit toxins that can cause significant harm all around the body.
The flow of oxygen through to the organs is impaired due to blood vessel damage. Pressure and inflammation build up in the brain, potentially causing nerve damage. The cerebrospinal fluid can be infected when there is injury to the brain lining.
How is Meningitis B treated?
If infected with meningitis B, it is essential you seek treatment as quickly as possible to minimise the risk of brain damage and other significant symptoms. Treatment is available through antibiotics. If you or someone you know shows any indicator that they may have contracted meningitis, request immediate medical attention at your local hospital.
We can provide a separate vaccination for meningitis A, C, W and Y, as these are not included in the meningitis B vaccination.
Course
Your age is the key factor in determining whether you receive two or three doses.
Boosters
Some very young children, those under the age of two, may require one or even two booster shots, but this will not be necessary for adults and older children.
How it is given
The meningitis B vaccination is delivered via injection.
Side effects
Possible side effects may include swelling or redness around the area of injection, plus fever or digestive issues.
Children
The minimum age to receive the vaccine is two months old.
Additional information
Only meningitis B is prevented through the meningitis B vaccine. It does not offer protection from meningitis A, C, W or Y. Untreated meningitis can result in severe complications. Seek medical care for yourself or anyone you know at the first sign of symptoms.
Before the vaccination
Children younger than two may benefit from paracetamol after their vaccination to minimise the risk of fever, so prepare accordingly.
Cost
The meningitis B vaccination costs £105 per dose. You do not need to make an appointment. There is a £50 charge for the meningitis ACWY vaccine.
