Get the reassurance you need
At Amiry & Gilbride Pharmacy, in collaboration with Better2Know, we offer a rapid herpes testing service that provides quick and accurate results. Using just two drops of blood from your fingertip, our test delivers results in approximately 10 minutes, all while you are at our clinic.
Better2Know’s discreet and confidential herpes testing is based on a 14-day incubation period. This is the recommended time between potential contact with the herpes virus and your testing appointment. However, if you are already experiencing symptoms, you can be tested immediately. Better2Know’s experienced clinicians will conduct the test on-site, giving you the peace of mind that comes with fast, reliable results.
The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is a highly contagious virus, classified into two strains: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is commonly found around the mouth, where it often manifests as cold sores around the lips, blisters, or even ulcers. Type 2 is typically located on the genitals, where it can cause painful blisters or sores. It’s important to note that the location of herpes lesions does not conclusively indicate the type of virus. Accurately diagnosing which strain you have can only be done through testing.
Better2Know offers specific herpes tests for each type: one for Type 1 and another for Type 2. You are able to choose to be tested for one or both types, depending on your situation and needs.
Key herpes and testing information:
- STI Type: Virus
- Transmission: Contact with herpes sores, blisters, or lesions / Skin-to-skin interaction / Unprotected sexual activity (oral, anal, or vaginal)
- Treatment: Creams or medications to manage outbreaks
- Consequences: Possible complications during pregnancy / You may feel unwell during outbreaks
- Sample needed: Fingerstick (blood)
- Incubation period: 14 days
- Results time: 10 minutes
Herpes testing overview
At our clinic, we offer instant testing for both types of HSV. It’s helpful to note that herpes is a common infection, with approximately 70% of the population carrying Type 1 and 15% to 20% carrying Type 2.
When should I get tested?
You can undergo the Better2Know instant herpes test immediately if you are experiencing symptoms suggestive of herpes. If you are not currently symptomatic, it is advisable to wait 14 days after possible exposure to the virus. This waiting period ensures the accuracy of your confidential test results.
When will I get my results?
Results from your herpes test will be available around 10 minutes after your blood sample has been collected. A staff member at Amiry & Gilbride Pharmacy will then provide you with a signed Better2Know Rapid Test Results Report, detailing your herpes test outcome.
How accurate is the instant herpes test?
Once the recommended incubation period has passed, the herpes test is 100% accurate. Better2Know’s private STI tests and screening processes are regularly reviewed by a panel of medical experts, ensuring you receive the most reliable and up-to-date STI testing available.

Attending Better2Know’s private sexual health clinic
Better2Know’s sexual health advisors are highly trained professionals who can assist you with any STI-related concerns. Your advisor at Amiry & Gilbride Pharmacy can also recommend the most appropriate sexual health tests based on your individual needs.
Sample collection and analysis
The process is quick and simple. Your expert clinician will collect a small blood sample, typically using a lancet to make a small prick in your finger. The blood is then applied to a testing cassette, along with two drops of buffer solution. The herpes testing cassette contains three sections where lines may appear, with one of these being a control line that confirms the test has been conducted correctly.
If three lines appear on the test, this indicates a positive result for both IgM and IgG herpes antibodies. Should two lines appear, it signifies a positive result for either IgM or IgG antibodies, depending on which line is visible. If only the control line appears, your test is negative for herpes infection.
Herpes diagnosis
If you receive a positive test result for herpes, you will be able to talk this through with the clinician or with one of Better2Know’s sexual health advisors. They will guide you on accessing the necessary medication or treatment.
What other STIs can I get tested for?
Better2Know’s private sexual health clinics also offer instant testing for six other sexually transmitted infections. In addition to testing for herpes, you can receive rapid, anonymous testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, chlamydia, and gonorrhoea. Better2Know’s instant screening options provide a comprehensive assessment of your STI status.

Additional Information on Herpes
Transmission Methods
Herpes is most commonly spread through direct contact with an active sore or lesion on an infected person. It can also be transmitted through kissing, skin-to-skin contact, and sexual activities, including intercourse.
Even without visible blisters or sores, herpes can be transmitted. This is due to a process known as asymptomatic shedding, where the virus is released through the skin before any symptoms appear. If someone who is uninfected comes into contact with the virus during this time, they are at risk of contracting herpes.
Asymptomatic shedding is a significant reason why herpes is so widespread. The only way to definitively know your herpes status is through testing for both types of the virus.
Symptoms
- 1 in 4 people with herpes experience mild or no symptoms.
- 2 in 4 individuals may have occasional outbreaks that can be treated with over-the-counter remedies if needed.
- 1 in 4 people experience severe outbreaks and may require antiviral medication.
If symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Sores
- Blisters
- Lesions
- A burning sensation when urinating
- Tingling around the outbreak site
- General feeling of being unwell
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- .atigue
Symptoms can vary and even if you have herpes, you may not have all of these symptoms. Symptoms can last for up to 21 days. The virus is shed during symptomatic periods and can continue to be contagious even after blisters or sores have healed. Outbreaks may occur regularly or sporadically and can be triggered by stress or illness.
Treatment
Outbreaks can be managed with a range of medications or topical creams. Treatments help control and reduce the severity of herpes outbreaks when they occur. Various over-the-counter remedies are available for managing Type 1 herpes, though they do not cure the virus; they can help lessen the severity and duration of outbreaks.
For those who experience severe and frequent outbreaks, doctors may prescribe antiviral medications. These medications help to decrease the severity of outbreaks and extend the time between them.
While herpes is not curable, treatment can significantly aid in managing the condition.
Consequences of untreated infection
More than half the UK population has herpes, and they live healthy, active lives. By following prevention guidelines and using prescribed or non-prescribed medications, you can effectively manage the virus.
A primary concern is experiencing a genital herpes outbreak for the first time during pregnancy. If you are pregnant and have herpes, it is essential to inform your midwife or healthcare provider as soon as possible. Early management can prevent complications.
Prevention
To reduce the risk of contracting or transmitting herpes, consider the following precautions:
- Avoid sexual contact if you suspect an outbreak is coming on.
- Refrain from contact during an active herpes outbreak.
- Avoid touching sores or blisters.
- Always wear condoms and consider other protective barriers during sexual activity.
- Use suitable medication to help improve symptoms.
- Discuss your herpes status with your partner to help lower the risk of passing it on.
