Tamiflu tablets

Introduction – What is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is a medication for the treatment or prevention of influenza (or flu). The active ingredient, oseltamivir, belongs to the medicine group of neuraminidase inhibitors. As the name suggests, these medicines inhibit the neuraminidase enzyme, which is vital for reproduction of the influenza virus.

How does it work?

In Tamiflu tablets specifically, the neuraminidase inhibitor is oseltamivir, which shuts down the flu virus’s ability to reproduce, in turn allowing your body to fight back more effectively.

How should I take Tamiflu?

This depends on your body weight, as anyone above 40kg is prescribed a 75mg dose twice a day, whilst people who weigh less than 40kg (typically children) will be prescribed a smaller dosage. A 5-day course will kill off the virus in most cases, and it’s advised that you complete this course, even if your symptoms clear up before then.

In cases where you want to prevent flu, one dose taken daily with your breakfast for 10 days will do the job.

What are the side effects of Tamiflu?

All medications can come with side effects, and Tamiflu may cause nausea, headaches, a fever, or simply a runny nose. Always consult the patient information leaflet, and note any allergies, before you take any medicine.
