Stay Protected This Winter with a Flu Vaccination

Flu spreads quickly through coughs, sneezes, and contact with contaminated surfaces, making it easy to catch and difficult to avoid during the colder months. Protect yourself, your family, and those around you by getting your annual flu vaccine.

At Amiry and Gilbride Pharmacy in Greater Glasgow, Clyde, Lanarkshire, Paisley and the Highlands, we offer both NHS and private flu vaccinations to help you stay protected throughout the flu season. Book an appointment here.

Availability of any prescription-only medicine is subject to a clinical assessment and at the discretion of the clinician. Supply is not guaranteed.

What You Should Know About Flu

How Flu Spreads

The flu virus travels through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also survive on frequently touched surfaces such as door handles and mobile phones. This is why maintaining good hand hygiene and getting vaccinated are key defences against infection.

Recognising Flu Symptoms

Symptoms can appear suddenly and are typically more intense than those of a common cold. Common signs include:

  • High temperature and chills
  • Headache
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Sore throat
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Nausea or digestive upset (such as diarrhoea)
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Persistent cough

How Long Does the Flu Last?

Most people recover within about a week, though tiredness and low energy can continue for a while afterwards. If your symptoms persist or worsen, the UK Health Security Agency recommends seeking medical advice.

Why Get the Flu Jab?

Getting your jab each year offers several key benefits:

  • Reduces your risk of catching the flu
  • If you do become infected, symptoms are typically milder and recovery is quicker
  • Helps prevent serious complications like pneumonia
  • Protects vulnerable groups such as older adults, pregnant women, and those with underlying long term health conditions

The flu virus changes every year, so the vaccination programme is updated annually to match the latest circulating strains.

Cost of Flu Vaccinations

  • NHS flu vaccinations are free for eligible patients
  • Private flu vaccinations are affordably priced and available without an appointment following a short consultation
  • Employer flu vouchers are accepted for workplace vaccination programmes

Everyday Flu Prevention

Alongside your jab, there are practical steps you can take to lower your risk:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water
  • Use hand sanitiser when soap is not available
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
  • Keep a safe distance from anyone showing flu-like symptoms

These simple habits, combined with vaccination, help reduce the spread of flu in workplaces, homes, and communities across Greater Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Paisley and the Highlands.
