Planning a holiday is exciting. Sun, sea, sightseeing, and a well-earned break from the usual routine but for many women, the timing of their period can get in the way of fully enjoying that time off. If you’ve ever found yourself dreading the arrival of your period right in the middle of your holiday, you’re not alone.
At Amiry and Gilbride, we offer a simple and effective solution: period delay tablets.
What Are Period Delay Tablets?
Period delay tablets, such as those containing norethisterone, are a safe and commonly used option to postpone your period. Taken a few days before your period is due, these tablets help delay bleeding until you’re back from your holiday or important event. They’re especially helpful if you:
- Have a beach or pool holiday planned
- Are attending a wedding or special occasion
- Are taking a trip where period products might be difficult to access
How Do They Work?
Norethisterone is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. It works by maintaining high progesterone levels in your body, preventing the shedding of the uterine lining (your period). Once you stop taking the tablets, your hormone levels drop, and your period begins—usually within 2–3 days.
When Should You Start Taking Them?
You should start taking the tablets 3 days before your period is due and continue taking them for up to 10–14 days (or as prescribed). Your period will usually start 2–3 days after you stop the tablets.
Are They Safe?
For most women, period delay tablets are safe and effective when used occasionally. However, they’re not suitable for everyone, especially if you have a history of blood clots, liver problems, or certain medical conditions. Period delay tablets are also not a form of contraception. That’s why it’s important to speak to a pharmacist before starting them.
