What is Aimovig?
Aimovig is a prescription medication specifically developed to prevent migraines in adults who experience at least four migraine days per month. It is administered once a month via injection, using either a pre-filled syringe or a pre-filled pen for convenience. Aimovig is available in two different dosage strengths: 70 mg and 140 mg. Typically, patients start with the 70 mg dose every four weeks, but if this dosage is not sufficient, it may be increased to 140 mg.
Clinical trials have demonstrated that Aimovig can significantly reduce the number of migraine days experienced each month. In a three-month study involving individuals with chronic migraines, participants saw an average reduction of 6-7 migraine days per month. Similarly, a six-month study focused on those with episodic migraines reported an average reduction of 3-4 days per month. However, it is important to note that Aimovig is not suitable for individuals who are allergic to its active ingredient, erenumab-aooe, or any of its other components
How Does Aimovig Work?
Aimovig works through a unique mechanism that targets and blocks the calcitonin gene-related peptide receptors (CGRP-R) in the body. These receptors are believed to play a crucial role in the onset of migraines. By preventing the binding of CGRP to these receptors, Aimovig helps to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. This mechanism of action makes Aimovig the first and only preventive treatment specifically designed to block CGRP-R, offering a novel approach to migraine prevention
How Is Aimovig Administered?
Aimovig is intended for subcutaneous administration, meaning the injection is given just beneath the skin. The recommended site for the injection is the outer area of the upper arm, although other suitable areas may also be used. The injection should be administered by a trained healthcare professional, such as a pharmacist, to ensure proper technique and effectiveness. It is advised to rotate the injection sites with each dose to reduce the risk of skin irritation. Injections should not be administered into areas where the skin is tender, bruised, red, or hardened.
Aimovig is available in pre-filled syringes or pre-filled pens, both designed for single use. The entire contents should be injected during administration. Before using Aimovig, it is essential to inspect the solution to ensure it is clear to opalescent, colourless to light yellow, and free of flakes or particles. Detailed instructions for administration are included in the package leaflet provided with the medication.
