What is Period Pain?

Period pain is a common and natural part of the menstrual cycle, often manifesting as cramping in the lower abdomen, which can extend to the back. This discomfort arises when the muscles of the uterus contract, compressing the womb’s lining and temporarily restricting blood flow, leading to pain in the abdominal region.

The primary symptom experienced by many women is cramping and pain in the lower abdomen. This discomfort can range from a dull, persistent ache to very sharp, intense spasms. The intensity and location of the pain can differ each month, potentially affecting areas such as the thighs, lower back, and the hips. Additionally, headaches, nausea, and general discomfort are sometimes associated with period pain.

At Amiry & Gilbride Pharmacy, following a brief consultation with our pharmacist, we can provide a treatment specifically designed to help alleviate period pain by reducing inflammation and offering effective pain relief.

Naproxen

What is Naproxen?

Naproxen is a potent anti-inflammatory pain reliever. It is commonly used to alleviate muscle and joint pain, including conditions such as arthritis, where inflammation is very often present.

Naproxen is effective in treating pain or swelling associated with various conditions, including:

  • Arthritis and joint discomfort
  • Back pain
  • Severe headaches
  • Sprains and strains
  • Gout
  • Menstrual cramps and period pain

The usual recommended dosage of Naproxen ranges from 250-500 mg, taken orally twice a day, or every 6-8 hours as needed.

How to Take Naproxen

Naproxen 500 mg tablets should be taken twice daily, ensuring a gap of six to eight hours between each dose. It’s typically advised to take one dose with breakfast and another with your evening meal.

While Naproxen can be taken as needed, it is often more effective when taken consistently over several days, particularly for acute injuries such as sprains or strains.

Always take Naproxen with or immediately after food to minimise potential side effects.

Side Effects

As with all anti-inflammatory medications, Naproxen can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Gastrointestinal issues such as upset stomach, heartburn, stomach pain, constipation, or diarrhoea, along with bloating and gas
  • Dizziness and headaches
  • Blurred vision or tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Itching or rash on the skin

Taking Naproxen with or after food may reduce the likelihood of these side effects.
