Introduction

Preparing for life at college or university is an exciting time, but it’s also an important moment to make sure you’re protected from life-threatening infections that can spread easily among young people living and studying in close quarters.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious illness and avoid disruptions to your academic and social life. Whether you’re from the UK or an international student, we offer a range of essential vaccines right here at our pharmacy, without the need to book ahead or visit a GP surgery.

Vaccinations

We recommend that all students, especially those around the time of their arrival at university and before their 25th birthday, ensure they are up to date with the following vaccinations:

Meningitis B Vaccination Protects against a severe bacterial infection that can lead to meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning)

Meningitis ACWY Vaccination Offers protection against meningococcal ACWY bacteria, often linked to serious outbreaks in university settings

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) — Helps protect against genital warts and cancers caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV)

Pneumonia Vaccination (one vaccination protects for 20 years) — A one-off vaccine protects against 20 strains for up to 20 years

Flu Vaccination (October to March annually) — Available annually between October and March to reduce the risk of seasonal flu

DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio) — Protects against three highly contagious diseases

MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) — Outbreaks of mumps and measles remain a concern; all students should have had two doses of the MMR vaccine
