Understanding the HbA1c Test for Diabetes

The HbA1c test is a key tool for managing diabetes. Unlike daily blood sugar checks, which give you a snapshot of your glucose levels, the HbA1c test shows your average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months. This test is essential for understanding how well your sugar levels are being managed.

What Does It Measure?

The HbA1c test measures the percentage of your red blood cells that are coated with sugar (glucose). A higher percentage indicates poorer blood sugar control, which can increase your risk of diabetes complications like heart disease and nerve damage.

What Are Normal Levels?

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Pre-diabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or higher

Why Is It Important?

The HbA1c test helps you see if you could be prediabetic or if you already have diabetes, it will help your pharmacist see if your current treatment plan is working or if adjustments are needed.
